Farmer killed in group clash
AMBALA: A farmer was allegedly killed in a group clash at Barara on Friday. According to information,the deceased Karamjit alias Lati had a quarrel with some youths of his village when he received a head injury. He died on the spot. Old rivalry was reported to be the cause of the dispute. The police reached the spot and sent the body for postmortem. The assailants escaped after the incident. No arrests have been made so far.
Five Ambala cops suspended
AMBALA: Five police officers,including the in charge of the Barara police station,were suspended after being found guilty of threatening to frame a driver in a false case as he had allegedly refused to oblige the SHO and his team. An inquiry was ordered by the Ambala SP,following a complaint against Barara SHO Bijender Singh,an ASI and three others. The inquiry officer found them guilty of threatening the driver for not putting his vehicle at their disposal. Interestingly,SHO Bijender was felicitated for nabbing a gang of motorcycle lifters recently.
UGC (NET) exam to be held on June 27
CHANDIGARH: The UGC (NET) examination will be held on June 27,2010 and candidates have to submit their forms on-line at http://www.ugc.ac.in,for which the last date is April 26. The print copy of the form (in duplicate),along with admit card and attendance slip (single) and original bank challan (UGC copy),four photographs duly pasted and attested by appropriate authority,are to be submitted on or before April 30. The Coordinator,UGC-NET,has started a helpline number 9417213390¿ which will be available from 8 am to 7 pm. No form will be entertained after April 30. In case the hard copy is not submitted with the Centre Coordinator,the application and roll number will be treated as cancelled.
Infosys holds placement drive
MOHALI: A team from Infosys,Pune,visited the Gian Jyoti Institute of Management and Technology (GJIMT) in Mohali on Friday to recruit BBA and BCA graduates. More than 100 students participated in the placement drive. The day-long process started with pre-placement talk followed by aptitude test,technical interview,voice test and finally ended with the HR interview. GJIMT Director Dr Vimal Kumar Aggarwal threw light on the BPO industry and its future trends.
Essay contest marks end of Heritage Week
Chandigarh: An essay competition was organised on the concluding day of the Heritage Week on Friday by the departments of Tourism and Education of the Chandigarh Administration. The topic was Archaeological and cultural heritage of Chandigarh. Around 100 students from 40 government and private schools across Chandigarh participated in the contest held at Government Model Senior Secondary School,Sector 10. The first prize had a cash award of Rs 3,000 whereas as the second and third position winners received Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000,respectively. Sunil Bhatia Director Public Instruction (Schools) and DEO Chanchal Singh gave away the prizes.
IMA local chapter gets new team
CHANDIGARH: The local Chapter of the new Indian Medical Association (IMA) executive body for the 2010-11 session was appointed on Friday. The theme of the function was Doctors for Renaissance. The new team includes Dr Zora Singh as president,Dr A K Kaushal as secretary,Dr S K Garg,Dr Umesh Jindal and Dr Neeraj Kumar as vice-presidents and Dr Anil Kumar as treasurer.
Landran college students participate in seminar at Istanbul
MOHALI: The Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) in Landran village participated in an international seminar held by the Istanbul Kulture University of Turkey. Around 130 academicians from 30 countries like Italy,Belgium,France and Hungary participated in The fourth family businesses congress in Istanbul,held from April 14 to 19. CGC Director Dr SPS Bedi was the only participant from the Asian region to deliver lecture on the occasion. The main purpose of this seminar was to discuss issues related to big business houses of India
Saupins School adopts Rock Garden
CHANDIGARH: Following CBSE directions to adopt a heritage site,which is a part of the Class IX and X curriculum,Saupins School has adopted the Rock Garden along with some other city schools. It has taken the responsibility of maintaining cleanliness of the premises. On Friday,about 40 children of Saupins School visited the Rock Garden along with teachers and cleaned Phase III of the garden.
330 donate blood at camps
MOHALI: As many as 330 persons,including students and faculty members,participated in the blood donation camps organised at Chitkara Group of Colleges near here and Doaba Group of Colleges near Kharar on Friday. The blood units were collected by a team of the Blood Bank Society of PGIMER. Speaking on the occasion,PGIMER Department of Transfusion Medicine head Dr Usha Rao said the requirement of safe blood was increasing and regular voluntary blood donations were required to meet the demand.
Seminar on Baba Banda Singh Bahadur held
MOHALI: Ahead of the tercentenary celebrations of the battle of Sirhind,a seminar on the contributions of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur to agriculture and society was held at SAS Institute of Information Technology and Research (SASIITR) in Mohali on Friday. Several writers and research scholars,who have written extensively on the life of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur,were present on the occasion. MOHALI: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal would be attending several functions in Mohali on Saturday. Badal would begin the day with the inauguration of the first ever state-of-the-art Punjab Forest Complex building in Sector 68 at 9.30 am. Second on the CMs itinerary would be the Civil Hospital in Phase VI at 10.30 am to lay the foundation stone of a dental implant centre and preside over a ceremony to appoint Jasjit Singh Thiara as new chairman of Punjab Health Systems Corporation.
Ex-mayor files petition against Home Secy,CITCO officials
CHANDIGARH: FORMER mayor Pradeep Chhabra has moved a petition in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate seeking directions to the police to register a case against UT Home Secretary Ram Niwas who is also secretary (Tourism) and D K Tiwari,managing director of CITCO and other officials under Sections 166 (Public Servant Disobeying Law),288 (Negligent Conduct in Repairing Buildings),336 (Act Endangering Personal Safety) and 427 (Mischief) of the Indian Penal Code. The matter has been slated for hearing on April 26. The former mayor has been up in arms against CITCO alleging that pressure tactics are being used to evict him from his rented office at the CITCO-run Hotel Shivalikview complex. Chhabra has already filed an appeal in the case wherein he has challenged the CITCO decision. The appeal is slated for hearing on May 30. Besides,Chhabra has filed a contempt petition against CITCO claiming that even though the court had stayed the matter till further hearing,pressure tactics like blocking the way to his office or snapping the electricity supply to the air conditioner installed in his office were being used. The contempt petition will come up for hearing on July 19.
Consumer forum directs institute to pay Rs 1 lakh to students
CHANDIGARH: Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum II has directed the Chandigarh Institute of Paramedical Science to pay Rs 1 lakh each to students for causing mental agony and harassment as they had taken admission in the institute and lost three years due to its non-affiliation. Seven students had lodged complaint against the institute stating they lost precious academic years after they were assured the institute was affiliated to Vinayak Missions Research Foundation,which is a deemed university. The students had taken admission in a two year diploma course in medical laboratory technology in 2006. They said they paid admission,monthly and examination fee to the institute,but the institute did not declare their results. The complainants included Vinay Kumar,Reeta Kumari,Abhimanyu Kanwar,Arun Kumar,Ajay Kumar,Anu Devi and Rakesh Kumar. Principal Des Raj Rana,from Maloya,and his son Ajay Rana are lodged in Burail jail in connection with a case registered against them. The Forum headed by president Lakshman Sharma found the institute caused mental agony to students. While the Forum has also asked the institute to refund Rs 1.12 lakh to Vinay Kumar of village Kunna of Hamirpur Himachal Pradesh along with Rs 5,000 as litigation charges,it has also been directed to refund Rs 70,500 to Anu Devi of Phase II,Mohali.
