PU student commits suicide
A first student UIET student of Panjab University allegedly committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance in his hostel late Thursday night. Pankaj Sharma,a resident of Himachal Pradesh,was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed later in the night. The police have ruled out any foul play and said he was mentally disturbed. The victims roommate told the police that Pankaj was a recluse and spoke little. A diary has also been recovered from his room where he wrote he was fed up of the world and wanted to end his life.The police are also probing whether a broken relationship with a girl has anything to do with his death. He told his friend last night that he has eaten something had severe stomach ache. He was taken to the GMSH Sector 16 from where he was referred to the PGI. He died at around midnight.
PGI molestation case: Doctor goes on leave
With the PGI inquiry committee recommending action against senior resident accused of molesting the wife of a patient admitted at the intensive care unit (ICU) on March 30,the doctor has proceeded on leave,said sources. Meanwhile the PGI has referred the inquiry to the administrative department and the establishment branch is working out on taking disciplinary action against the resident doctor,said senior officials. The incident dates back to March 30 when wife of a neuro patient from Himachal had alleged that senior resident doctor,Dr Vikas,of the department of anaesthesia molested her at 1 am. A formal complaint was lodged and the head of the department of anaesthesia at PGI,Prof Jyotsna Wig,recommended action and passed on the case to the administrative branch. The doctor was shifted to the advanced eye centre (AEC) the next day,but according to sources he has gone on leave. Authorities said action will be taken soon.
Green belt inaugurated in Sector 46
A green belt was inaugurated in Sector 46 C and D on Friday by Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Water Resources Pawan Kumar Bansal. Developed in an area of 4.09 acre the green belt would have a large variety of shrubs,ornamental trees,flower beds and different kinds of plantation. Addressing the gathering,Bansal requested the area residents to take responsibility for taking care of the green belt. He said that the Municipal Corporation is developing the green belts in the city with the aim of providing residents with adequate recreational facilities. He emphasised on the need to save water and requested the gathering to change their pattern of water usage to avoid the possibility of water crises in the future. The civic body should take necessary measures to create awareness among the residents regarding saving potable water he said. Mayor Anu Chatrath said it was the 43rd green belt dedicated to the public. The corporation is developing more green belts in this year that would be providing all kind of facilities keeping in view the interests of elderly people,daily walkers and children. Among the others who were present included Municipal Commissioner,Dr Roshan Sunkaria,Deputy Mayor Sheela Devi,area councillor Ravinder Pal Singh along with other officers and councillors.
Operators resent hike in rent of taxi stands
Taxi operators in the city are up in arms against the Chandigarh Administrations decision of hiking the rent for taxi stands. The operators rue that the condition of 5 per cent yearly increment of the rent has not been mentioned in the allotment letter issued by Administration in 2004. Thus,the hike is a violation of the terms and conditions. The representation submitted by the operators to Deputy Commissioner Brijendra Singh and Joint Commissioner Municipal Corporation T P S Phoolka mentions that in the year 2007,the general rent was enhanced 100 per cent and the Municipal Corporation also revised the rent of taxi stands without consulting the union.
Five get 3 years in prison for bank fraud
The Special CBI Court has awarded three-year imprisonment to each of the five accused,including a bank manager,in a corruption case of Corporation Bank branch at Jagadhri here. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh on each accused,who will have to undergo additional imprisonment in case of non-payment of the fine. The case pertains to a fraud of Rs 25 lakh,which was misappropriated by five persons by taking a bank loan at the instance of manager R A Tayal and CA Vipin Gupta. The three other accused Anil,Kamal and Ajay prepared fictitious loan cases,which were reimbursed in 2003. In its investigation,the CBI found all five guilty of misappropriating the banks money fraudulently. The case was handed over to the CBI after the bank authorities detected it during an in-house investigation. A Case under the Corruption Act was registered against the manager and four others.
Two injured in BSNL relay box blast
Two persons were injured in a blast at the relay box of BSNL in the Nahar House area close to the police post number 4 late on Thursday night. The blast was so powerful that a wall of the Police post collapsed. Those injured,Harbans Singh and Gian Chand,were admitted to the civil hospital with multiple injuries. Following the blast,there was a power shutdown and people began inquires to know what had happened. DSP (Headquarters) Rameshwar Sharma visited the spot soon after the incident. A team of forensic experts from the Mahuvan Police Training Centre,Karnal,also visited the spot and took samples of the damaged relay box. The cause of blast can be determined only after getting a report from the Madhuvan Forensic Centre.
International School of Animation launched
Aspiring animators can now pursue a degree course at the International School of Animation which was launched on Friday by Aneet,Goel,CFO,IPOMG Animation India. He said the school is a subsidiary of IPOMG,LLC globally,and is a joint venture collaboration with two educational institutions,Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University,Hyderabad,and Ferris State University,USA (FSU). Classes would take place at the campus coming up near Chandigarh at Shiva Enclave on the Chandigarh¿Kurali road. The representatives claimed that for practical exposure,students would be sent to Hanger-42 Studio in Los Angeles and Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. The programme has many firsts to its credit. It is valid and recognised both in India and USA,widening the scope of employment, said Goel.
