Debutant Parag Khanapurkar scored a century in his first match as Mumbai eked out a narrow three run win against Punjab in the preliminary quarter final match of the Vijay Hazare trophy here today. Khanapurkar’s smashing 123 off 118 balls,studded with 10 fours and two sixes,helped Mumbai reach a modest score of 227 after being sent into bat by Punjab at Sardar Patel Stadium at Motera. Southpaw Khanapurkar also managed to pick up a wicket at a crucial juncture with his leg-break.

Mumbai 227 in 46.3 overs (Khanapurkar 123; R Sharma 3/42,B Sharma 3/42) beat Punjab 224 in 49.1 overs (Mandeep Singh 70; Iqbal Abdullah 2/46,A Raut 2/30) by 3 runs.

Monty emerges winner
With a score of 77,Rakesh Monty emerged as the winner in 0-9 handicap category during the 2nd Amateur Caddies Golf Tournament at Chandigarh Golf Club on Monday. Rajesh and Mahinder Singh with an identical score of 78 followed the winner at the second and third spot,respectively. Rajesh,who played the better back nine,ended up as the runners-up. Meanwhile,in 10-18 handicap,Harvinder emerged as the winner with a score of 78. Vicky and Jaipal secured the second and third spot with a score of 80 and 82,respectively. Amrit Lal,all of 10-years-old and son of a caddy,was declared the youngest participant of the tournament. Akshay Sharma,who plays IGU Amateur circuit,carried the golf ball to a distance of 281 yards on the 18th hole and was declared the longest driver. Rajesh was declared the winner as he put the ball 8 ft 2 inch from the pin on the 11th hole. He also got the prize for maximum birdies. In 10-18 handicap category,Sukhwinder Singh had maximum pars. According to SK Sharma,president,Punjab Golf Association,six best caddies from the tournament will be made to play two rounds of golf at Chandigarh ,Chandimandir and Panchkula Golf Club. Out of these six caddies,best three will be taken under the wings of their organisation and provided with golf equipments.As many as 34 Caddies with a handicap of 0-9 and 60 between 10-18 years of age participated in this tournament.

Cricket trials today
Fatehgarh Sahib District Cricket Association will conduct cricket trials at Saffron City School,Sirhind,on February 23 on 2 pm onwards,to select a district team. The team will represent district in Katoch Shield Inter-District Cricket Tournament being organised by Punjab Cricket Association from March 1 onwards. Players should bring their original date of birth certificates with them. The selected players will take part in coaching camp.
