HPU clears over three dozen new courses,10 depts

Perhaps for the first time in a decade-and-half,the Himachal Pradesh University has taken a significant leap after its executive council decided on Thursday to introduce new professional courses,among them archaeology as suggested by Himachal Governor Urmila Singh,and has also decided to open 10 new departments.

Perhaps for the first time in a decade-and-half,the Himachal Pradesh University has taken a significant leap after its executive council decided on Thursday to introduce new professional courses,among them archaeology as suggested by Himachal Governor Urmila Singh,and has also decided to open 10 new departments.

Thursday’s decision indicates that the university is finally taking steps to face competition from private universities despite severe fiscal constraints and a huge backlog of vacancies in the teaching and non-teaching departments.

At meeting presided over by Vice-Chancellor ADN Bajpai,the council approved the proposal to introduce a slew of master’s degree programmes: M Tech (bio-technology and information technology),M Sc in remote sensing and GIS,environmental sciences,statistics,polymer science,M A in (disaster management,Hindi journalism,population and development studies and tribal studies). The varsity will also introduce MBAs in infrastructure development,banking and life insurance,retail management,bio-technology,environment management and rural development.

The executive body also approved a proposal for post-graduate courses in financial studies,accounts and taxations,costing,banking and insurance and retail management with short term special courses in Veda,Vyakarana ,Darshana and Himalayan culture and spirituality.

“ The Council also recommended to start post-graduate diploma courses in cultural tourism,adventure sports,Pahari miniature painting,bio-informatics,buddhists studies,cyber law and IPR and patent law”,said the University spokesman,Ranbir Verma.

Bachelor degree courses in pharmacy,fine arts and library sciences,B Tech in bio-technology,computer science ,electronics and communications will be introduced with diploma courses in cyber crime prosecution and defence,multi-skill hotel operation,Himalayan culture and spirituality and in Urdu.

The Council has decided to introduce certificate courses in Urdu,Chinese ,Japanese,Human Rights,tourist guide,computer,personality and skill development,religious tourism and freedom struggle tourism.

The council has recommending establishing ten new departments. They include: anthropology,archaeology,bio-chemistry,geology,library and information science,defence studies,fine arts,philosophy,traditional knowledge system and pharmaceutical sciences.
