The Himachal Pradesh police have destroyed at least 35 quintals of high grade cannabis in notorious Malana valley of Kullu district on Tuesday. The harvested crop was stored in two separate houses for supplying seeds during next cultivation season.
Additional Director General of Police (CID) I D Bhandari, who led the special commando operation said cannabis was being cultivated over 60 bighas of government land. He was assisted by SP (Narcotics) Vinod Dhawan and DSP (CID) Sunil Negi.
This is definitely the handiwork of foreigners who are actively involved in the cultivation, harvesting and smuggling of charas, named as Malana cream,an internationally famous product sold at chosen markets outside India. The quality of the plant (which has a height of seven to eight feet) and has superior grade of seeds are found only in Malana valley, Bhandari told The Indian Express over phone from ground-zero. He said the crop was shown after clearing forest area.
More than 40 men, including armed commando jawans, raided the village of Anatrang and the hamlets surrounding it. The raid part, however, found several empty houses. Bhandari said the villagers may have had prior information about the operation.
The police did not face any resistance, though it had gone prepared for a counter offensive. The CID had set up its base camp in the foothills of Malana, stayed there for the night to beginning an early morning operation.
We have videographed and taken photographs of the operation. We will send the seed for analysis to know the quality of the crop and its origin, said Bhandari.
