Final semester students of the citys three sought after engineering institutes might have another six months to complete their graduation. But the majority of them already have plum jobs in hand. From the batch to pass out in June 2012 at PEC University of Technology (PEC),University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) and University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (UICET),65 per cent students are already placed, three of them with the highest package of Rs 16.8 lakh per annum.
While the demand for computer science and IT students remains the highest, the engineering institutes believe that the condition has improved compared to a couple of earlier years. One of the signs claimed by them is the highest package at PEC,which has increased from Rs 12.7 lakh to 16.8 lakh, offered by the same company Microsoft Corporation. The number of fortunate ones of the highest package has increased from one to three this year.
The companies started visiting the campus early this year at the end of August. At present, such is the situation that companies want to hire students from the computer science and IT branches but there are hardly many available for placements, said PEC Training Placement Officer Perminderjit Singh. A total of 60 companies have hired as many as 290 students out of a total of 360 from PEC in the last three months. Campus visits for placements by another 40 are still in the pipeline. Some of the major ones include Microsoft,Goldman Sachs,IOCL,HAIL,Tata Motors,Maruti,Texas and Future First. Similar has been the trend at the two prime engineering institutes on the PU campus – UIET and UICET. The highest package at UICET has touched Rs 9 lakh per annum.
Out of 61 students at the chemical engineering institute,40 have already been placed with the highest package being Rs 9 lakh a year and the average being Rs 5 lakh per annum. IOCL has hired three students with the highest package. The other companies to have finished their hiring process include Infosys,Reliance Industries,Tech Mahindra,Punj Llyod,ITC,Samsung,Small Cubes,Evalue Serve,Ambuja Cement,UB Group,Jubilant Life sciences and Nestle.
Last year by the end of November, only 31 students had been placed while this year the number is more. The major hirers with highest packages are the oil companies and consultancy services, informed Placement-in-Charge Dr S K Aggarwal.
But now packages are not the only preference of students. For instance, despite the higher packages offered by public sector companies, they prefer the growth and better opportunities that they see in the private sector, he added.
Despite a 1.5 times increase in the number of seats,68 per cent of UIET students have already been placed. Though the highest package bagged by the students of UIET is not as lucrative as that of the other engineering institutes, the number of students placed and companies visiting the campus has been encouraging for both the faculty and students.
The highest package has been offered by Nestle, which has hired four students for Rs 4.75 lakh per annum. The highest number of students hired so far has been by Infosys, which was the first company to visit the campus and has taken 177 students with packages of Rs 3.25 lakh per annum.
