Himal leads the pack

Chandigarh's Himal Gusian grabbed the top spot with 5.5 points at the end of the sixth round on the second day of the Bobby Fischer Memorial Open Chess Championship held at Parhsuram Bhavan,Sector 37,on Saturday.

Chandigarh’s Himal Gusian grabbed the top spot with 5.5 points at the end of the sixth round on the second day of the Bobby Fischer Memorial Open Chess Championship held at Parhsuram Bhavan,Sector 37,on Saturday. Ludhiana’s Vikas Sharma and Ram Prakash,and Chandigarh’s Jitender Joshi were in tow with 5.5 points,respectively.

Playing black,Himal employed the Sicilian Defense in reply to the opening King Pawn move made by Ram Prakash. With both the players going strong,Himal decided to play safe. His opponent tried to make things complicated for him but he did not find any success. Finally,both the players agreed for a truce in 20 moves.

Meanwhile,on the second board,Vikas Sharma was in his usual element as he surprised Manu Aggarwal by making the opening move from Queen Pawn from the white side. With no counter move to make,Manu resigned after he was two pieces down in the game. Vikas won the game on move 42.

Chandigarh’s Ameek Malhotra found the going tough against Jatinder Joshi in the Sicilian Defense game and went down in 41 moves.

Meanwhile,Chandigarh’s Baijnath Prasad,Abhinandan Vohra,Rakesh Kochhar,Dr Anil Raina,Ludhiana’s Arvinder Preet Singh scored five points each. Chandigarh’s Ameek Malhotra,Manu Aggarwal,Sunil Bansal,K Ananda,Satpal,Manmohan Singh,Simran,Tejas,Arunima,Amritsar’s Sumit Mahajan,Kanwar Ujjwal Mehra,Panchkula’s Rajat and Jalandhar’s Gagandeep Singh had 4.5 points each.
