Councillors stall meeting, allege rampant corruption in civic body
Pandemonium prevailed during the budget meeting of Ambala Sadar Municipal Council, held here today.
The councillors, agitated over the irregularities and corrupt practices in the functioning of the civic body, did not allow the meeting to take off. The meeting was being chaired by Council President Neelam Sharma. Councillors, led by Senior councillor Kamal Jain, also burnt copies of the budget to express their resentment over the malpractices prevailing in the civic body, and alleged that corruption was rampant here.
Before the meeting could begin, councillors Mahesh Goel,Onkar Nathi and Kamal Jain stood up and started shouting against the municipal administration. They alleged that there was no justification in presenting the new budget, when the resolutions passed for implementation of old budget had not been implemented.
They further alleged that the affairs of the council were run at the behest of land mafia assisted by corrupt officials. All the development schemes and projects had been kept in abeyance, and there was deterioration in the providing civic amenities to the citizens. There was little effort to ensure cleanliness in the city, and heaps of garbage could be seen at every corner, they further highlighted.
INLD councilor Hira Lal,along with Mahesh Goel, leveled allegations of rampant corruption in the Council office. They further alleged that no work of the people was done unless they greased the palm of the officials. However,Executive Officer Jagat challenged their allegation and asked the members to give this in writing,so that he could bring the guilty officials to book.
