For all the latest advancements in medical science and technology,a growing number of people are looking out for alternative forms of healing. Practices like tarot and reiki to meditation and yoga to reading self-help books are proving to be popular. Take for example social activist Harleen Kohli, who recently realised that there was a power within her that could change things. A couple of months back,I was sick, popping pills and trying every remedy to cure ailments from high blood pressure to blood sugar. In the process,I had become irritable and short-tempered, she says. Kohli then came across a book called The Secret. I started concentrating, convincing myself that I was calm, cool and collected and not indulging in hyper emotions. It took a while for it is difficult to renergise this way, she adds. Today,Kohli can read without her glasses and is off her medication. I keep getting my tests done but these are diseases of the mind. You treat the mind and get better, she says.
A spiritual search is not aimed at distancing ourselves from the outside world. It helps us live in complete awareness and with greater enthusiasm,to create a positive and happier reality, says psychic healer Swati Prakash when asked about the subject.
Illnesses are manifestation of fear, points out Maj Gen RD Singh (retd) who has been a reiki master for 12 years now and also practices meditation. It is the simplest way of healing. While religion divides people, meditation unifies, he says, adding that everyone should spend an hour everyday without music, cell phone and TV. Spend that time with yourself. If you dont love yourself, how can others? he asks. Meditation is like giving the mind a bath and cleansing it,much like we cleanse our bodies, he adds.
Thought culture can also act as a solution to a majority of our problems. Only those who get experience can relate to it, says Jyotii Subramanian, yoga guru and author of One Master,One Disciple. The disease is always present in the body at a emotional level. During the course on yoga, one starts emitting positive energy,in the process healing oneself, says Subramanian, adding that a large number of young people are joining to cope with their hectic lifestyles.
For National Award winning costume designer Dolly Ahluwalia Tewari, colours have a therapeutic effect. They give me peace and confidence, says Tewari. Bright colours reflect positive energy and make you happy. Green plants, for example, soothe the mind and eyes, she says.
Clinical psychologist Monica Singh, however, insists that the first line of treatment is medicine. When you need medicine, take it and when you need to get an objective opinion, dont hesitate to visit a psychiatrist, she says. There are ways of building a healthy lifestyle,of developing coping skills but a doctors advise is must for specific problems, Singh signs off.
