Grading system will end unhealthy competition among students: CBSE

To acquaint teachers with the grading system and to dispel confusion regarding the issue, the Central Board of Secondary Education is holding a three-day workshop at Manav Mangal Smart School. The first day of the workshop saw teachers from over 30 schools asking questions ranging from distribution of marks to division of syllabus.

The board officials said grades would be awarded on a nine-point scale. Schools also expressed doubts over the new progress card according to which students would be assessed on their life skills, behaviour towards classmates, teachers and participation in other activities.

Speaking on the occasion,DR Yadav, regional director,CBSE,said the purpose of starting the grading system was to finish the streak of competition among students. “The new system will discontinue with the practice of declaring toppers and failed candidates. The urge to outdo each other has led to a cut-throat and unhealthy competition among students,” said Yadav.

Officials expressed hope of the marking scheme being success barring a few initial hiccups. “I am more concerned about the bias that may creep in during the monthly assessment. We have been guided on how to evaluate children without being partial at the workshop. But getting acquainted with the new system will take some time,” said a teacher.
