Govt accepts probe report

The Jammu and Kashmir government has accepted the report of inquiry into the killing of three boys by police in Anantnag in south Kashmir in June.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has accepted the report of inquiry into the killing of three boys by police in Anantnag in south Kashmir in June.

On June 29,police shot dead Shujat-ul-Islam,Ishtiyaq Ahmad Khanday and Imtiyaz Ahmad Itoo in the backyard of a house at Anchadora in Anantnag, allegedly in cold blood. Following a series of massive protests, the J&K government ordered a magisterial inquiry into the killings.

On Saturday,CM Omar Abdullah told the Assembly the government has accepted the inquiry report. “Follow-up action has been initiated on basis of the report,” he said.

In his report, inquiry officer Ghulam Mohammad Dar has recommended action against the guilty policemen as well as the senior police and civil officials who were present near the spot when the policemen killed the boys.

Dar has also accused police of “manipulating” the FIR and not furnishing details about the ammunition used by the policemen in question.

The report refutes the police theory that stone-pelting was going at Anchadora at the time of the killings. In fact, the nearest place where stone-pelting was going on at the time is nearly 1.7 km away.

Police have chargesheeted constable Nisar Ahmad for the killings after he was identified by an eye witness.

The families want strict action against those who killed their sons. “The CM had promised action within 24 hours. It took the government over months to just accept the report,” said Asif Ahmed,Ishtiyaq’s cousin. “Government should take action against all those indicted in the report without any hesitation.”
