With twin victories on the Asian tour within a span of a month last season,Kapurthala golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar showed that he has got the talent to excel at the international arena. The 25- year-old,after fetching two top-ten finishes this season, including the second place finish in the Avantha Masters, will be playing in the Russian Open at the Tseleevo Golf and Polo club starting on Thursday. Bhullar believes that he is prepared to take on challenges during the European Tour and is expecting a string of good finishes in the Asian tour as well as European tour this season.
“After taking rest for sometime last month,I am back in action again. I am concentrating on the European tour events as I am now eligible to take part in it. The conditions in Europe are different from Asia. The difference was quite evident in the practice round today at the Moscow Course. I had to make some adjustments to my swing for the challenge in Russia. I will take a break after the Russian Open and then play in the Johnie Walker Championships at Gleneeagles,Scotland, starting August 22,” shared Bhullar talking with Sportline from Moscow.
Bhullar’s last win came at Venetian Macau Open in October last year after he won the Yeangder players Championship.
Bhullar also spent some time with the German coach Peter Wolfenstetter in Munich,Germany last month and believes that working with Wolfenstetter will not only benefit his game but also help him adjust his game while playing in Europe.
The Punjab golfer was among the top 100 golfers in the world rankings for 11 weeks before he dropped to 112th spot earlier this month. Bhullar is currently ranked 123rd in the world rankings but wants to break into the top 100 again.
“I am hitting the ball well. Last month,I spent some time with Wolfenstetter. We worked on ball striking, which is a key aspect of game while playing in Europe, and his inputs have helped me a lot. Normally I do not care much about rankings and the focus is on playing well. But I do realise that being among the top 100 golfers will help my career,” felt Bhullar.
Like many Indian golfers,Bhullar, too, followed fellow Indian golfer Shiv Kapur’s heroics on the opening day of the British Open last week. Bhullar became the youngest Indian golfer to play in a major tournament but missed the cut by four strokes in 2009.
“It was great to see Kapur doing well in the opening round of the British Open. Indian golfers have the talent to do well at the international stage and it was a moment of pride for all of us. It was unfortunate that he could not manage the score later but it was incredible to see him making the cut,” expressed Bhullar.
