In an effort to promote golf training in Chandigarh, Indian Golf Union, the national body of golf in India, in association with Chandigarh Golf Association, Wednesday started the Indian Golf Union State Golf Development Programme at Chandigarh Golf Association Range. The programme, which is aimed at youngsters from the city schools as well as economically weaker section (EWS), will see Dronacharya awardee coach and head coach of Indian Golf Team Jesse Grewal training the golfers as well as imparting training to the CGA coaches too.

The initiative has been implemented from the funds allocated to S K Sharma, secretary, Indian Golf Union, and Harpuneet Singh Sandhu, IGU Governing Council member and chairman of National Golf Squad of India, from the Indian Golf Union.

“The IGU State Golf Development Programme aims to impart training to youngsters in golf along with CGA coaches under the able guidance of Dronacharya awardee coach Jesse Grewal. Under this programme, the golf equipment as well as training will be imparted to youngsters, including EWS students, in a phased manner and the aim is to nurture India’s future golfing talent. The programme is also aligned with the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs’ Khel Niti 2025 Policy, which lays emphasis on grassroots sports development at the micro level by identifying and nurturing children from schools as well as all sections of society,” said Sharma.

The IGU programme will see youngsters being imparted training for three months, followed by a new batch of youngsters to be trained at the Chandigarh Golf Association Range. This initiative will also see more children from Chandigarh schools being selected for the programme apart from EWS trainees. “Chandigarh sees the presence of international golfers like Jeev Milkha Singh, Gaganjeet Bhullar, Shubhankar Sharma and others. The Indian Golf Union’s State Golf Development Programme aims to nurture and support golf talent through this programme and we will require a new set of trainees every three months for the training. At present, more than 20 players have been included for this programme’s first phase. A 10-day national camp for India’s top 10 players will also be held in Chandigarh in November and international players will mentor the players during the national camp,” said Sandhu.
