Producer Aamir Khan launches Peepli Live promos, director Anusha Rizvi clueless

When Aamir Khan speaks, the world listens. And that is what happened when the actor hosted a media event to launch the first two promotional videos for his forthcoming production Peepli Live. Arriving dot on schedule,Khan started with showcasing the trailer of Peepli Live, which received an encouraging response at the Sundance Festival earlier this year.

Though the film, scripted and directed by Delhi-based filmmaker Anusha Rizvi, was widely believed to be about farmer suicides,Khan said otherwise. “It is a satire on the widening gap between rural and urban India. I’ve been telling the media that it doesn’t address the topic of farmer suicides but you just don’t believe me,” said the actor with a smile.

One of the two trailers—part of the 12-promo series planned by Khan—with Raghubir Yadav and Rajpal Yadav in lead roles, had ample humour. However,at the core of the film is the decision of a farmer (Rajpal) to commit suicide in order to get government compensation to run his family, which triggers off a hilarious series of events.

Though Khan kept his audience entertained, the director of the film was missing from the event. In fact, till a day before the event, she was unaware of the promo launch. She said that the film conforms to her views on the life in rural India. “It is usually the politicians who are heard but I hope to voice the common man’s concerns and present their side of the story.” About working with Khan, she said,“Some experiences have been good and some not so good, but what matters most is the energy, the people and the experience that went into making the film.”

The producer, known for his aggressive marketing skills that have earlier aided the success of Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na and Taare Zameen Par,applauded Rizvi for her work. “It is an excellent script and the casting is done well too.” Taking a dig at himself,he added,“Casting plays a huge role and needs to be done right, like how I played a college student in 3 Idiots.”

Incidentally,Khan also joined Twitter on Wednesday and his first tweet was a prose in Urdu, dedicated to Amitabh Bachchan. “Mr Bachchan insisted that I join the Twitter community and I could not have refused him,” he said. Within a few hours, the actor had a 56,000 following. Khan says that he will not be using Twitter to promote his forthcoming production. “It is co-incidental that I joined Twitter the same day I have launched the promos of Peepli Live,” he clarified.
