GNDU first in Asia to start MD course in sports medicine

The Guru Nanak Dev University has become the first university in Asia to introduce Doctor of Medicine in Sports Medicine.

The Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has become the first university in Asia to introduce Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Sports Medicine. Admissions in this regard will start from the next academic session in accordance to the guidelines prescribed by the Medical Council of India (MCI),said Dr Jaspal Singh Sandhu,Dean of Department of Sports Medicine and Physiotherapy on Tuesday.

While addressing mediapersons,Sandhu said the University Grants Commission has approved the course. It is a big achievement for us. There is no other university in Asia that provides the MD degree in sports medicines though diplomas and graduation degrees and even PhDs are common in the field, he added.

Sandhu went on to say that the department was also the first to start a Masters degree in Sports Physiotherapy in South-Central Asia.

Due to the popularity of sports in the country,it is imperative that there will be a huge demand for doctors with expertise in sports medicine,thus the department fully equipped with the infrastructure to conduct such a course had requested the MCI for its approval in this regard.

After visiting our world-class laboratories and infrastructure,the MCI allocated this course to us, said Sandhu.

The course was designed by the Board of Specialty in MCIs Sports Medicine. This course will be open to MBBS graduates and will be based on an entrance test to be conducted by the university. During the three-year course,students will be attached with various hospitals and institutions,besides being engaged in research, he added.

Keeping in view the acute shortage of sports psychologists in India,the faculty has also decided to introduce Masters in Sports Psychology from the next academic year,open to graduates.
