Refers six to ten cases of premature birth to PGI every month

The General Hospital at Sector 6 refers at least six to ten cases of premature birth and infantile complications to PGI,Chandigarh,or other hospitals in a month. Reason: the The paediatrics department does not have any incubators and only baby warmer.

“Apart from incubators,we also do not have ventilators, which also makes our task difficult at times. The department surely needs to upgrade itself to tertiary level,” said Dr Radesh,of the paediatrics department at GHS-6.

Doctors claim that though the utility of an incubator cannot be overlooked in paediatrics, they have been unable to procure one as the hospital is a secondary care centre and awaits to be upgraded.

Hospital authorities, however, claim they will set up a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU),which is expected to become functional by year-end. This also implies that the unit would fall under the tertiary category.

Senior officials in the hospital informed they would buy open-air incubators, which is considered more sophisticated, and also train NICU doctors on integrated management of infantile and childhood illnesses.
