Gauba repatriation sparks recognition worries

With the repatriation of Dr Krishan Gauba, concerns are being raised over the recognition of the Dr H S Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital.

With the repatriation of Dr Krishan Gauba, concerns are being raised over the recognition of the Dr H S Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital.

The six-member committee report on the dental institute has concluded in its report presented on Tuesday that “as per the rules/ directions of the Dental Council of India (DCI),it is mandatory that a dental institute/ hospital be headed by a regular,well-qualified director/ principal.

As the recognition of Dr H S Judge Institute by the Dental Council of India is under process, the committee feels that in the interest of the students, particularly the first batch, the institute must have a regular,well-qualified Director Principal to strengthen its case for recognition.”

According to the Dental Council of India’s (DCI) latest communication, all the three objections raised in the inspection committee report on the Dr H S Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital have been cleared.

The file for the much-awaited recognition of the institute has been cleared by the Council, which would come up for discussion at the General Body meeting scheduled for March 5 and 6.

The three observations that were raised and received by the institute on January 30,after the inspection on January 13,include deficiency of one lecturer in the Department of Human Anatomy, deficiency of one reader in Anaesthesia and one of the Anatomy lecturers not being present during inspection. To this, the Institute replied that as per the guidelines there should be one reader and two lecturers for every 40 students while the institute has two readers and three lecturers, thus fulfilling the deficiency.

On the deficiency of reader in the Anaesthesia Department, the institute justified it by replying that as the senior lecturer present in the department has seven years of experience (equaling that for a reader),the case may be considered. The absence of one of the lecturers of Human Anatomy was justified by presenting the leave records of the lecturer, who was on sanctioned leave to attend the marriage of her sister-in-law.

Dr Krishan Gauba, who is one of the members of DCI,revealed that the DCI Secretary himself had communicated the latest development that the file for recognition has been cleared.

“On February 1,the file for recognition was cleared by the DCI and the next day sent to be included in the agenda of the General Body meeting. The same was communicated to the University authorities immediately. As compliance to all the observations has been made and approval by the DCI given, the case for final approval for recognition by the General Body is in the favour of the Institute,” said Dr Gauba.

However, the university authorities have been saying that there is no written communication for the same yet. PU Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti said that he is not aware of the DCI approval as he has not received any written communication.
