Project on space colonies gets this group of six an invitation to NASA

Ever visualized and conceptualized life on space? These six youngsters have and for it they have also won a chance to attend the National Space Settlement – 28th Annual International Space Development Conference by NASA in Orlando,Florida in May. “It was part of the NASA National Space Settlement Contest 2009 and we had to design a project on Life Support System in Space Colonies,” tells Kirti, one of the six Class X students of Dikshant International School, whose project has been short-listed.

Been working on it for over a month,it required a lot of permutation and combination, they tell us. “Different scientific formulas and philosophies had to be applied before we could come up with the concept of Hydroponic farming,” Kanika tells us it is a kind of farming that is done without soil and sun. “Water enriched with vitamins and LED lights of different colours help the plants grow,” pitches in director of the school Mitul Dikshit, who tells us that the challenge was to make a model that meets all the needs of the occupants and looks like a simulation of our home, the earth. “And so keeping in mind that the colonies in space will require access to food, space, people, construction material, energy, transportation, life support, simulated gravity and radiation protection,we decided to make the colonies on the Earth’s orbit,” Pragya and Kanika explains that the orbit will be better suited as it is closer to earth and can be reached in a matter of hours. Besides, she feels,as compared to Moon and Mars, here there is ample continuous solar power and the weightlessness of the orbit will make construction of large colonies considerably easier than in a gravity environment.

Having done in-depth study of physics, mathematics, space science and environmental science, and made frequent visits to the library, all six including Aditya,Shreya and Abhishek are now preparing to fly on May 28. “Hoping that our project is beneficial in the real project too and to learn more about space.” Best of luck!
