The recruitment process for 1,200 constables in the Chandigarh Police has evoked an impressive response.

The recruitment process for 1,200 constables in the Chandigarh Police has evoked an impressive response. Over 96,000 people from across the country have applied.

In March this year,the police had advertised for the posts,including 370 for women constables. Till April 30,the last date to apply,the police received 96,202 applications.

As many as 10,211 applications from women candidates have been received.

Of the 1,200 posts,375 for men and 201 for women are in the general category. The remaining vacancies are reserved under OBC and SC categories.

Applicants from states as far away as Kerela have applied.

Maximum number of applicants (60,594) are from Haryana. Punjab,which once dominated in the recruitment process,is far behind with only 13,252 applicants.

Rajasthan comes next with 8,402 applicants,followed by Uttar Pradesh (6,670),Himachal Pradesh (2,689) and Chandigarh (2,263).

Also,1,649 applications have been received from Delhi,68 from Jammu and Kashmir and 82 from Gujarat.

SSP (headquarters) Alok Kumar said the response had always been encouraging,but it was “definitely huge this time”.

“The response for these posts is very good this time. Even the educational qualifications of the candidates are better,” he said.

A senior police officer said job stability,no fear of transfer and a lifelong stay in Chandigarh are reasons for the overwhelming response.

Salary of a constable in the Chandigarh Police starts at Rs 13,100.

“Once a constable is recruited in the UT police,he stays in Chandigarh for the rest of his career,giving him a stable family life and a respectable career with promotions on the way,” the officer said.

The recruitment process,which includes physical and written tests and interview,will be over by December this year.
