Five cheers for city in IIt-JEE

The results of the IIT-JEE,which were declared on Wednesday, did not cheer up the city as the number of students in the top 100 All India Ranks (AIR) fell from 10 to five this year. The highest rank achieved stood at sixth — last year,a Chandigarh secured had secured All India third position.

But there was a bright side too. A girl from the region made her mark with All India 12 rank in the engineering entrance exam, which has been mostly dominated by the boys. Sumegha Garg stood at the top in the All India ranking among the girls.

Surprisingly, none of these toppers are from Chandigarh and only one of is a resident of Panchkula. The rest are from the neighbouring areas in the region and were in Chandigarh for preparations. Last year, out of the ten candidates in top 100 ranks, five of them were from Tricity — three from Chandigarh and two from Panchkula.

Of nearly 9,000 students from the region who took the all India entrance exam, 95 have managed to clear it. They will now be able to get admissions in the 15 Indian Institutes of Technology spread across the country. With the IITs having nearly 9600 seats, any student who has made it to the first 9,000 could easily get admission in the country’s premiere institute.
