In a breakthrough in the ongoing drive to make Punjab a safe and secure place, the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) of Punjab, in a joint operation with Hoshiarpur Police, arrested Krishan Gopal and his son Keshav, both residents of Baincha village in Hoshiarpur, in connection with the targeted firing at Ganpati Jewellers on October 18.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said the two were caught after a brief exchange of fire at Mehdoodpur village in Hoshiarpur. A .32 calibre pistol with live cartridges was recovered from their possession, along with the motorcycle used in the crime.
DGP Yadav revealed that following the attack, the shop owner received a threatening call from an unknown foreign number, demanding ₹20 lakh in extortion. “The accused were directly involved in the firing incident at the jewellery shop. Their swift arrest reflects the Punjab Police’s strong stance against organised crime,” he added.
A First Information Report was registered under Sections 336, 324(4), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 25 of the Arms Act at Police Station Mahilpur, Hoshiarpur.
Sharing operational details, ADGP Promod Ban of AGTF said that joint teams from AGTF and the Hoshiarpur district police, under the supervision of DIG AGTF Sandeep Goel and Sandeep Malik, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Hoshiarpur, conducted human and technical investigations to identify the suspects.
“When intercepted by the police at Mehdoodpur, the accused resorted to indiscriminate firing in a bid to escape, but were overpowered after a brief exchange of fire,” said Ban.
The operation was led by Parminder Singh, Superintendent of Police (Investigation), Gurpreet Singh, CIA In-charge, and Chander Mohan, AGTF In-charge.
A fresh case has also been registered under Sections 109, 221, 132, and 3(5) of the BNS and Section 25 of the Arms Act at Police Station Mahilpur in connection with the encounter.
DGP Yadav confirmed that further investigations are underway to establish forward and backward linkages in the case, including potential connections to organised criminal networks.
