This is one fishy story that doesn’t stink. For when you entrust your hands and feet to these tiny Garra Rufa fish, also known as Doctor Fish, you get a beauty treatment with a difference. “Fishicures” are catching up across India, and bringing it to Chandigarh are two young entrepreneurs — Sakoon Dhaliwal and Simranpreet—who have opened Fish-e-Cure in Sector 9.

“We both tried fish spa therapy in Singapore while studying there. It seemed a unique concept and we decided to bring it closer home,” says Dhaliwal,20,as we comment on her perfectly pedicured feet. “The difference is noticeable after a single sitting,” adds this student of MCM-DAV College.

Fish-e-Cure boasts five tanks of Garra Rufa fish. A staff member gives our feet a quick clean-up before we dip it in. “The fish have a natural tendency of nibbling off the dead skin. They have no teeth. They gently feed upon the dead skin of your hands and feet, making them soft and this promotes blood circulation,” explains Simran when we ask him what first-timers always want to know,“Do these fish bite?”

We place our feet in ankle-deep water. The fish are attracted in seconds. Don’t expect a tickling feel that will have you squirming or rolling on the floor. Instead,it’s a light, pleasant sensation that stays well after the “fishicure” is over.

The fish gather around, looking as though they are glued to the feet. They nibble away at the dead skin, particularly at the heels, leaving it soft. The last step is a massage by a staff.

While a 10 minute hand “fishicure” is priced at Rs 150,a 10 minute feet “fishicure” is for Rs 175. “We maintain a high standard of hygiene. Each tank is fitted with a filtration pump and we only use mineral water in the tank,” says Simran.
