Barely a week after it was inaugurated by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, the newly constructed modern jail at Fardkot continues to be in the news for all the wrong reasons with the the Principal Secretary (Homes),S S Bains on Thursday ordering the suspension of the jail’s superintendent,Rajmohinder Singh Dhaliwal and store keeper Darshan Singh.

The suspension orders come after prisoners alleged that there was a lack of basic facilities and ‘worm-infested’ food was being served at the much hyped modern jail. When complaints regarding poor quality of food were not heard by jail officials, some 600 inmates went on a hunger strike on Wednesday morning.

Bains accompanied with Deputy Commissioner Faridkot Ravi Bhagat had come to the jail on Thursday to inspect the ground realities himself. S P Tejinder Singh Maur has been handed over the charge of the jail for now and a departmental inquiry has also been ordered in the case.

The chief minister had inaugurated this modern jail that has been constructed at a cost of Rs 113 crore and is reportedly based on prisons in Spain on November 8. Spread across 72 acres, the Faridkot jail has about 13 barracks and can house around 2,072 inmates. The prison has its own power system,an inbuilt video conference system, water treatment plant, eight sheds where jail inmates will be imparted skills, library, kitchen,a 50-bed hospital and a dispensary. What sets it apart,is that it has 96 quarters,48 of which will be used by families of certain inmates who will be allowed to stay for a week.

At the very first week of the its operations, however, the prison has been beset by problems. The inmates allege that despite the jail’s doctors having certified the food being served ‘not fit for human consumption’,they were being given the very same food.

Following his inspection,Bains said: “ The government has made this jails so that inmates can get a decent life and if any official is found denying them their basic rights then he will have to face the music”.
