Photography is intrinsically connected to my profession as an eye surgeon, and what I see with my eyes,I try and translate it into a photograph using the camera, says SPS Grewal, talking about Footprints, his first exhibition of photographs. The camera, says the doctor and writer, has been his constant companion since childhood, and despite his busy schedule,he has always taken out time for this passion, which he says relaxes his mind and soul. As a surgeon,I believe that best results come from an amalgamation of art and science, adds Grewal.
Footprints is a collection of moments, seized from time during his travels around the world, representing momentous stills, the footprints of life and nature on the sand of time, seen through the lens of his camera and eye. On display are 50 photographs, which take the viewer on a journey to various places and moments be it Venice, wildlife safaris, the sea in various moods, limestone formations, nature in all its glory and artistic initiatives, buildings, weavers at work,or even Kashmirs lakes. The challenge was to translate a view on to paper,so the viewer will see what you had and imagined, says Grewal, who has taken the prints of the photographs on glossy photo paper, heavy matte paper, canvas, using ultra-chrome hi-gloss inks or durabrite inks to ensure the photographs have a shelf life of more than 100 years.
No Photoshop has been used in these works, and these have been edited just for colour corrections and contrasts, says Grewal, adding that the camera can magically arrest a vision in the photographers eye and make it a living, vibrant image to universal delight.
The exhibition is on at Punjab Kala Bhawan,Sector 16,
Chandigarh,till September 29
