Drive safe,be safe: Road Safety Week concludes

The 21st Road Safety Week observed by the Chandigarh Traffic Police concluded on Thursday with a function at the Traffic Park in Sector 23.

The 21st Road Safety Week observed by the Chandigarh Traffic Police concluded on Thursday with a function at the Traffic Park in Sector 23.

DIG,Headquarters,Mahavir Singh was the chief guest at the function that included cultural programmes by schoolchildren.

SP (Traffic) Hardeep Singh Doon informed the audience about various road safety programmes organised over a period of seven days starting January 1 and assured these activities would continue throughout the year.

“The city saw more fatal accidents in 2009 as compared to 2008 and we are going to look into the reasons,” Doon said,adding that CCTV cameras at 20 intersections and vehicle-actuated systems would help make traffic movement smooth in the city.

The DIG also spoke about management of traffic in the city and various steps being taken by the police to ensure hassle-free movement.

On the occasion,prizes were handed out to winners of various activities,including painting competition,blood donation camp,training workshops for TSR drivers,heavy and light drivers,rickshaw pullers,outstanding traffic marshals and police officers.

SSP S S Srivastava,SP (City and Crime) Madhur Verma and various deputy superintendents of police,station house officers,traffic marshals and members of the Central Traffic Advisory Committee were also present at the function.

During the week,cultural and other activities were organised by educational institutions,social organisations,corporate organisations,the Transport department,the traffic police and citizens to raise the level of awareness on road safety.

The programmes included a seven-day road safety exhibition at the Sector-17 Plaza,a scooter rally by girl students to promote wearing of a safety helmet,road safety workshops for auto-drivers,rickshaw-pullers,school bus drivers,bus and truck drivers,first-aid workshop for PCR and traffic police personnel,a conference on road safety and school area traffic management for school principles,among others.
