DRINK driving topped the list of traffic violations this New Year eve. Of the 203 people challaned by the Chandigarh traffic police across the city,107 were for drink driving and 96 for other violations. 108 vehicles were impounded by the police.
Besides this,nakas set up by police stations challaned 60 people while three vehicles were impounded after their drivers failed to produce the requisite documents.
In all,359 vehicles were checked by the Chandigarh police at ninety nakas across the city while the Police Control Room (PCR) attended to 202 incidents between 8 pm and 8 am on night intervening December 31 and January 1. They include 21 accidents and 51 quarrels. Most cases of brawls were reported from Sectors 8,9,10,11 and 26.
Around 2,300 police personnel were deployed the eve of the new year. They included twelve deputy superintendents of police (DSPs) and 36 inspectors. Inspector General (IG) of Police R P Upadhyaya,Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) City Dr Sukhchain Singh Gill and SSP (traffic and security) Maneesh Chaudhry were among those who patrolled the streets around midnight.
Meanwhile,the UT Excise and Taxation Department held surprise checks at various party venues in Sector 26,Elante Mall,J W Marriot and other places. There was no major violation at any place. The minor ones were mostly related to entertainment taxes and were resolved on the spot, said RC Bhalla,assistant UT excise and taxation commissioner.
