An increasing number of fashion divas in the city are stepping out in single-piece dresses for special dos
Attending two back-to-back soirees in the city, one hosted by a grand dame of fashion and the other by a pretty socialite, left us convinced of one thing – when it comes to special dos,you have to be seen in a stunning dress. Yes,we know the little black dress has been a fashion must-have for years now,but its more than just an all-black affair now. With summer stepping in soon, the ladies are slipping on pretty peaches, pinks, greens, whites and more. Unlike a few years ago, dressing up for a social do meant wrapping around a Kanjeevaram or choosing a pretty ethnic suit and if one really wanted to go the Indo-Western way, then a tunic or kurti over trousers sufficed. Not anymore, agrees Sector 8 based stylist Shelly who runs Shellys Wardrobe and has been stocking up on dresses for over a year now. The ones that do well arent too short and reach the knees making them look elegant, adds Shelly mentioning a summer line-up that makes the most of floral patterns.
Among those who have always had a soft corner for dresses is city-based anchor Jaspreet who we caught flaunting a fine collection at dos across town. Her dress wardrobe includes colours like deep red, turquoise and even apple green. I love dresses. Not only are they feminine but look smart too. Dresses are definitely this years biggest trend, admits Jaspreet.
Whats more, the dress has shed its short, cutesy image to emerge as chic and smart. If you notice dresses or frocks arent being sported by just teenagers or college-going crowd. Those in their 30s and 40s now have no qualms in slipping on one either, remarks city-based designer Neharika Oberoi who owns a couple of dresses in A-line silhouettes which she teams with high heels. Indian women are now opening up to the trend. Observe how many of the dresses use a wider A-line silhouette, drapery, tucks, pleats and bows, tells Oberoi. Yes,at socialite Nagina Grewals pre-birthday bash, the ladies stepped out in smart numbers!
Catering to the rising trend, this Friday also saw Radhika Dhawan of First Row roll out designer line-ups with a special range of dresses in particular. We brought in dresses by designers like Malini Ramani,Gauri and Nainika,Narendra Kumar,Mandira Virk,Varun Bahl et al and the ladies were really happy to have a selection, mentioned Dhawan. As far as styles go,Radhika emphasizes on flowy silhouettes, floral patterns and worked upon necklines.
If you are hunting for the perfect ensemble, also check out the Micky Chabbra store in Sector 10 that has a range of party dresses in all colours of the rainbow. Fashion stores such as WAGA and Ten West too are out with their party wear that brings back the little evening dress albeit in an all-new avatar. Ready to dress, are we then?
