Dr Ashok Chopras new album Shabad is a testament to his religious beliefs
For as long as he can remember,Dr Ashok Chopra has faithfully held on to his religious beliefs. As a testament to this faith,he has been recording his divine renditions in the form of music albums of bhajans and kirtans. Chopra was in town to release his third album,Shabad, which has been made along with musician Surjeet Singh Parmar.
Chopra, better known as Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopras dad,has been attached to Gurbani since childhood and wanted to sing the ragas in their original form. I finally got a chance to do it, says the doctor, smiling,as daughter Priyanka, who had the final say on the album, sends him wishes via a video clip. Although I was in the Army,I always made it a point to have a music teacher at home. That is how Priyanka too got her music education, he says.
Dressed traditionally, with a blue turban to complete the look,Chopra looked every bit the Gurbani singer. The album, made over two years,is a compilation of tracks with a classical base and minimal use of instruments to retain the richness of religious thought. One discovers lifes meaning through such devotional indulgence, he says.
While the album is dedicated to the Save the girl child campaign,Dr Chopra is working on another one on saving the River Ganga. It will be a song on the pollution plaguing the Ganga and it is meant to increase awareness, he says. Having held Gurbani programmes at the famous Pathar Sahib Gurudwara in Ladakh, apart from singing Naatiya Kalaam (Muslim religious verse),Kalam-e-Ala-Hazrat and bhajans,Dr Chopra is now keen to experiment with Christian verses.
While participating in the 16th Foundation Day celebrations of ITFT Education Group,Dr Chopra remembered his days in DAV College and Panjab University and taking part in musical choirs and competitions. Chandigarh will always be dear to me, he signed off.
