It’s been not a long journey but an adventurous one. Two boys from lesser known cities of the country met on campus,in this case the Northern India Institute of Fashion Technology (NIIFT) in Mohali, loved each other’s work and soon graduated with a single dream – to make a mark, together! Today,Parvesh and Jai have not only designed for Bollywood celebrities but made global forays too. While their beach wear and resort line is retailed as far as the Greek Islands,South of France,Los Angeles,Sydney and London; the high-end couture line labelled ‘Raasleela’ has been quite the talking point at many fashion weeks. We met up with the two in the city at the multi-designer store Soh-Koh in Sector 26 where Parvesh-Jai will offer their ensembles in the future.

“Since we have studied here,we know the market well. For starters though we are just bringing in our Raasleela specials,” mention the duo. Just like its name,Raasleela derives its inspiration from the lives of Radha and Krishna. “It is the dramatic portrayal of the doting emotions between Radha,Krishna and all his devotees,” explains Parvesh. Specializing in Indian ethnics, gowns and sumptuous couture,Raasleela is also a coming together of vivacious elements like music, colours, dance moves and of course Vrindavan. “The place is so moving…also there’s so much of art, culture, colour, vivacity that inspires us to design,” adds Jai. The two,who are regular visitors to Vrindavan, have spent considerable time researching the heritage of the place. “The colours, the temple paintings, the peacocks, the flowers and beauty of Vrindavan have found their way into our collections and will continue to do so,” asserts Parvesh.

Interestingly, the two designers have neatly demarcated their areas of work. “For instance Jai looks after design and production and I chip in with marketing and planning,” answers Parvesh. While one hand sees them put together Indian couture, the other spectrum brings in beach wear and resort wear for international destinations! “These days all India brides head to the beaches for their honeymoon,so our collections are now apt for India too,” quips Parvesh who spent considerable time researching in the Greek Islands. “Since as Indians we had no clue on resort or swimwear having no beach lifestyle to boast of,” he says. Talking of closer home, the two are happy to have re-visited their alma mater in Mohali. “Everyone has fond memories as a student and so do we. I think NIIFT gave direction to our creativity but once we were on our own, hard work was our biggest lesson in the real world,” summed up the two.
