Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was released on 30-day parole from Rohtak’s Sunaria jail on Tuesday morning, a week before the Delhi Assembly polls on February 5.

The Dera chief shall be staying at his Sirsa Dera headquarters for the first time since he was convicted of raping two disciples in August 2017. On the previous occasions that Singh had been released on parole or furlough, he had never been allowed to stay at or visit his Sirsa-based Dera headquarters. Instead, the Dera Sacha Sauda chief used to stay at his Dera’s Baghpat ashram in Uttar Pradesh.

A government official revealed that a report was sought from the Sirsa district administration before allowing the Dera chief to stay at his Dera headquarters. “After the district administration informed that there was no objection from their side, permission was granted to him,” the senior officer said.

The last time Singh was released from jail was in October last year when he stepped out on 20-day parole, three days before the Haryana Assembly polls. The Dera chief’s paroles and furloughs have often coincided with elections in Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, which reportedly have several Dera followers.
