DAV refuses to host youth fest,PU to hold it on campus

After the ongoing row between the former college principal and DAV College’s managing committee over the principal’s post, the refusal to host Panjab University’s zonal youth festival has now put DAV College,Sector 10 in the spotlight again.

After the ongoing row between the former college principal and DAV College’s managing committee over the principal’s post, the refusal to host Panjab University’s zonal youth festival has now put DAV College,Sector 10 in the spotlight again.

Stating that it was not the college’s turn to hold the annual event,DAV’s officiating principal,Prof Shashi Gupta claimed that some kind of misunderstanding by University authorities had led them to short-list the college for the event. “This year was not our turn, the university faulted on deciding that. There must be some kind of misunderstanding and mistake on their part. Only this was mentioned in the letter sent to the University requesting to revoke their decision. Moreover,it had been almost ten years since the University organised the youth festival on the campus,” said Prof Shashi Gupta justifying his college’s refusal.

Panjab University Dean Students Welfare (DSW) Prof A S Ahluwalia, however, said Prof Gupta had stated that due to the ongoing dispute and his deteriorating health, the college would not be able to organise the festival. “The college communicated to us that amidst all the controversies between Dr B C Josan and College Managing Committee over the college head they cannot organise the youth festival. Also,as the officiating principal does not have powers,it would be difficult on their part. The officiating principal had also cited his poor health conditions as one of the reasons for exempting the college from this responsibility,” Prof Ahluwalia said. “In the first meeting,DAV College accepted to organise the youth festival while in the following meeting to materialise the events, they simply denied citing various reasons,” added the DSW.

Finally, when all other city colleges also refused to take responsibility,Panjab University decided to organise the festival on its campus. The decision was taken in the meeting chaired by the University student dean on Thursday. The festival will be held during the third week of October for which selections are slated to begin in the coming week. The zonal youth festival is organised by city colleges every year on rotation basis. Teams from all the city colleges participate in this cultural event after clearing the selection rounds. The winning teams in their respective categories qualify for other inter-university and regional cultural events.
