ANANDPUR SAHIB MP Prem Singh Chandumajra recently highlighted his achievements of the last two years and boasted of initiating various development works. But Daun, the village adopted by the MP in Mohali two years ago, tells a different story.

A visit to the village reveals a story of sheer neglect, with the sewerage, water supply and inner roads being in bad shape. Residents say even half an hour of rain turns their village into a pond as the sewerage system has totally collapsed.

The village is around 3 km from Mohali, the dream city of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, and is known for its religious importance. Hundreds of devotees come to pay obeisance at the village every Sunday. But despite that, the village is sans the basic facilities.

Ajmer Singh, a panchayat member, narrates a long list of grievances. The sewerage system is pitiable. Whenever there is rain, the village turns into a pond and it becomes difficult to walk in the streets. “The water enters houses, there is no proper sewerage system. The stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for mosquitos which spread diseases,” he said.

He points out the problem being posed by the under-construction community centre which has been incomplete for the last many months. The community centre is being constructed near the village pond and the construction was stopped due to unknown reasons around a month ago.

Harbans Singh, another resident, highlights the problem of sanitation and says there is no plan to lift the garbage from the village. “Whenever one enters the village, one can notice huge heaps of garbage outside the village. It stinks all the time. It is also the reason for diseases. No one ever comes for fogging,” said Harbans Singh.

He claims that the residents of the village still depend either on Kharar or Mohali for primary health facilities.

An official of the district administration told Chandigarh Newsline that a grant of Rs 50 lakh had been sanctioned for the development works in the village and all the pending works would be completed in the coming months.

When contacted, Chandumajra admitted that there were problems in the village but he was trying to find out solutions. He said he was taking a keen interest in the development of the village and was keeping a close watch on the ongoing development works in the village.
