CTU seeks funds to replace aging fleet

Chandigarh Transport Undertaking is awaiting approval for its proposal to seek funds under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission for purchase of more than 80 buses.

Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) is awaiting approval for its proposal to seek funds under Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for purchase of more than 80 buses. Of the more than 500 buses that comprises the CTU fleet,86 buses are in need of replacement. These buses are more than 10 years old.

CTU had sent a proposal to the Administration to seek funds from JNNURM. Officials state that once the in-principle approval is received, the details would be worked out. Both AC and non-AC buses that were purchased with funds from JNNURM are plying on city roads. These buses are being used on the long as well as local routes.

Based on the population of the city,a five-year plan was prepared that highlighted the need for procuring additional buses for replacing the ones that were old. With the aim of increasing the use of public transport and preventing congestion on the roads,a need is felt for additional buses.

Meanwhile officials state that the funds that had been sought for additional fuel has been received. For the past few days,CTU was facing a shortage of diesel due to funds not being available. On Tuesday diesel was supplied to CTU depots on credit.
