CTU drivers snuff out three lives

A newly inducted constable of the Chandigarh Police died in an accident at the Piccadily roundabout on Sunday evening.

A newly inducted constable of the Chandigarh Police died in an accident at the Piccadily roundabout on Sunday evening. Promod was returning with a friend from the Sector-22 market after buying a mobile phone from his first salary when he was crushed by a CTU bus.

Promod was riding pillion on a motorcycle driven by another newly inducted constable (his namesake) who sustained minor injuries in the accident, the police said.

The accident took place around 5 pm,when the constables were going towards the Sector-34 police station, where they were posted.

The victim’s friend reportedly halted the bike (HR 35-B- 2551) behind the CTU bus (CH01-G-5884) at the traffic signal of Sector 21,22,34,35 roundabout. When the signal turned green,he tried to overtake the bus from the left side, but the bus also turned left, blocking their road space.

“They suddenly came from the left side. The conductor saw them trying to balance the bike and alerted me. But as soon as I applied brakes, they lost balance and the man riding pillion slipped under the rear wheels,” the bus driver,Karnail Singh, said.

Promod was rushed to the Sector-16 hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the bike refused to talk to the media in the hospital. Promod was unmarried; his family has been informed.

Dream cut short
Promod, who came from a poor family in Mahendargarh in Haryana, had completed his training only last month. He was posted after the passing-out-parade on June 11.

His friends said he was excited on receiving his first salary, and as “he always wanted to keep a mobile phone, the first thing he did with his salary was to buy one”. “He bought the phone so that he could talk to his relatives,” one of his friends said.

Driving without helmets
Meanwhile, eyewitnesses said they were not wearing helmets, which were clung to the motorcycle. The police said since they were not wearing helmets,“they tried to hoodwink the traffic police by overtaking the bus from the left side”.

However, bus driver Karnail Singh has been booked for causing death due to negligence, under Section 304 A of the IPC. Singh said he was “innocent and the speed of the bus was negligible as he had just left the traffic signal.”

SHO of Sector-36 police station Anokh Singh said: “Preliminary investigations revealed that the CTU bus turned left, overlooking the bike. So the driver was booked.”
