Criteria for admission to MA in English tweaked

Now students need to secure 35 per cent marks in the entrance examination for admission to masters course in English. The Syndicate meeting of the Panjab University (PU) held here on Monday approvedrecommendations of the Board of control in English to increase the pass percentage of the entrance examination from 20 per cent to 35 per cent for MA (Eng) Entrance examination 2013 (under O-CET).

Due to paucity of time only 18 items were discussed rest of the issues will come up for discussion in next meeting. Moreover,the House also accepted the recommendations of the Selection Committee for the post of director (public relations) and approved Vineet Punia for the job.

The issue regarding Prof R K Kohli’s request for deputation to join as Vice-Chancellor of DAV University was withdrawn since the application itself was withdrawn by Prof Kohli. He has since proceeded on extraordinary leave without pay for six months.

It was granted to him by PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover and he has since joined his new assignment. Prof Madhu Raka,Department of Mathematics and Dean Research,is now the new Dean,University Instruction.

The issue regarding deputation of Prof. P S Jaswal,Vice Chancellor Rajiv Gandhi National Law University,Patiala will be referred to a Committee comprising syndics. The decision will be communicated within three months. The House held that a policy regarding this deputation issue should be formulated so that such matters can be taken care of .

The recommendations of the Committee constituted by the V-C to examine and recommend the changes in the PhD guidelines,if any,in the existing guidelines approved by the competent authority for the award of the PhD degree (which are in conformity with UGC Minimum Standards and Procedure for award of PhD degree Regulation 2009),were “adopted overall,leaving things open for improvement”.

The suggestions of the Syndics would be collated and in a joint sitting of college representatives,preferably senators,with the Committee members and all the Deans,a comprehensive set of guidelines would be prepared.

Vice-Chancellor,Prof Arun Kumar Grover informed the House that the Union Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has approved the issue of a Commemorative Postage Stamp on Prof Ruchi Ram Sahni of denomination of Rs 5 as a one-time exercise.

A minimum number of 1 lakh stamps and requisite philatelic ancillaries will be issued. The Union Films Division,Mumbai has also agreed to make a film on Prof Sahni with the university’s cooperation.

The House also felicitated a number of faculty members for various achievements.

Make budget online: NSUI

The National Students Union of India (NSUI) on Monday submitted a memorandum to Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover and the syndicate members to make the budget online. In the memorandum it was stated that budget should be put online to ensure transparency,student empowerment and to fix accountability of university administration.
