Courses on skill development held for underprivileged students

Regional Institute of English (RIE),Sector 32 has been offering a computer-based three-dimensional course for students of classes 9 and 10. The course has been divided into three programmes – ‘computer skills’,including basic knowledge of MS-Office and some internet research,‘communication skills’,focusing on speaking and writing skills and ‘attitude formation’.

The writing activities are also conducted on the computers that have been upgraded with softwares that automatically correct the errors that the students commit.

Dr Sharda Kaushik,Director of RIE,says,“Attitude can make or mar an individual,a society and a nation. So we specially focus on the attitude formation among students. The institute charges no fee from these students and has trained them with computer knowledge.”

Praveen,a student of class IX,said,“We have computer classes in school also,but it is only two times a week. Here,we can do everything by ourselves and practice more efficiently. My typing speed has also increased.”

Preeti,a student of Class X,said,“Our learning has developed immensely. We are also being taught English grammar for one hour everyday”

Hamari Kaksha,a Chandigarh-based NGO,is conducting workshops on communication skills and vocabulary building at Sai Mandir,Sector 29. Various volunteers from colleges are taking these classes,being attended by almost 300 students.

Sarita Tewari,who is associated with the NGO,says,“We are trying to provide the basic skills of communication and build a strong vocabulary among students who cannot otherwise afford to join institutes. The students are showing a keen interest and happily spend time in learning. The output as of now is good,and improving.”
