“The crime has left her in misery, ignominy and trauma as she has been blotted with the title of an unwed mother,” ruled the District Courts on Saturday, while announcing the quantum of sentence for the 21-year-old engineering student, convicted two days ago for raping a woman.

Abhishek Verma,a student of Chandigarh Engineering College,Landran, has been granted seven years’ imprisonment and slapped with a fine of Rs 1.10 lakh.

The victim was impregnated by Abhishek in March last year, following which she proposed marriage to him. After Abhishek refused the offer, she lodged a complaint with the police.

In March earlier this year, the victim urged the court to persuade Abhishek to marry her even for a day to legitimise her daughter.

And while she promised to divorce the accused the very next day,the court turned down her request.

The court further observed,“The boy raped a helpless woman. He befooled her with a false promise of marriage, knowing well that he had no intentions of the same.
