Constable dies after his bike rams car in Sector 29

A constable with the Chandigarh Police died after the motorcycle he was riding rammed into an Alto car parked along the road in Sector 29.

A constable with the Chandigarh Police died after the motorcycle he was riding rammed into an Alto car parked along the road in Sector 29. According to reports,the streetlight on the road were not functioning,nor were the car’s parking lights.

Constable Harpal Singh was headed to Kishangarh when the accident took place. “Harpal left office around 10 pm on his motorcycle (HR-23-B-3810). There was no streetlight on the road and an Alto car (CH-03-X-1802) was stationed there with its parking lights switched off,” said Station House Officer Inspector Yashpal Sharma,adding that the constable sustained serious head injuries despite wearing a safety helmet.

A passerby informed the police following which Harpal was taken to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16. After his condition deteriorated,he was referred to the PGI where he succumbed to his injures in the early hours of Thursday.

The body was handed over to Harpal’s family after postmortem.

The deceased is survived by his parents,wife and two children.

A case on charges of causing death due to negligence and improper parking of vehicle has been registered against the driver of the Alto car,who fled the spot after the accident.

On the defunct streetlights,the police said they would take up the matter with the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh.

“The corporation is supposed to ensure that the streetlights function properly. If they are found guilty of negligence,action will be taken against the officials concerned,” said the police.
