Raising anti-government slogans,a group of Congress workers led by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee secretary Bhupinder Singh Gora stormed into the Mini Secretariat here and staged a demonstration outside the deputy commissioner’s office on Thursday.

This is said to be the first incident when agitators associated with a political party entered the Mini Secretariat and raised anti-government slogans. Protests usually take place outside the building, with their representatives submitting a memorandum to the DC.

The Congress workers were protesting against the registration of “false cases” against party men in Maur. It also demanded an end to the government move of selling off government properties. As Gora made a scathing attack on the government in his speech,DC Gurkirat Kirpal Singh watched the live feed of the proceedings through CCTV inside his room. The demonstration continued for about half an hour.

“This is definitely a security lapse. This is no way to register protest. I have asked the SSP to fix responsibility of the officers on security duty,” the DC told the media after the protestors left, after handing him over the memorandum. He added that the protestors would be arrested for the act. SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill said he would get the matter inquired as to how the protesters managed to reach the DC’s office.
