The Congress has demanded the arrest of senior Akali leader and former legislator Veer Singh Lopoke and a police officer in connection with the murder of Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Sadhu Singh Takhtupura. They also sought an inquiry into the case by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
A delegation of senior Congress leaders,including MLAs Sukhpal Singh Khaira and Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria and District Congress Committee (Rural) chief S R S Lally Majithia,met Inspector General of Border Range I P S Sahota on Wednesday and took up the matter with him.
Addressing the media later,the Congress leaders said the state police would not be able to deliver justice because they were under pressure from the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal to not act against the guilty.
The police are not arresting Lopoke and sub-inspector Rashpal Singh despite their prima facie involvement in a conspiracy to eliminate Takhtupura, said Khaira,adding that several eyewitnesses to the murder had named the two in the crime.
The police are dillydallying the matter under pressure from Chief Minister P S Badal,Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal and former minister and Akali MLA Bikram Singh Majithia. Amritsar SSP (Rural) G S Chauhan has been forcibly sent on leave because he registered the murder case against Lopoke, said Khaira. The murder accused is being sheltered by Majithia, said Lally Majithia.
Khaira added: We know a special investigation team has been formed,but this is an eyewash. This is a political murder and we know Lopoke and Rachhpal would be given the clean chit.
Earlier,former Punjab Youth Congress chief and former MLA Jasbir Singh Dimpa,too,criticised the Badal government for the deteriorating law and order situation.
