With the byelections to Ward 10 just four days away,a clash broke out here on Monday night between Congress and BJP-SAD members at the Badheri village.

With the byelections to Ward 10 just four days away,a clash broke out here on Monday night between Congress and BJP-SAD members at the Badheri village. Ugly scenes were witnessed at the village as allegations flew thick and fast with both parties blaming each other for the incident.

BJP-SAD coalition claim Congress candidate Bhupinder Singh Badheri allegedly attacked Kissan Morcha President Jhujhar Singh’s brother Mohan Singh. However,Congress members while denying the allegation argued it was Badheri who was attacked first.

According to BJP-SAD members, the incident occurred when Mohan Singh was allegedly threatened by Congress workers when he was campaigning for party candidate Malkit Singh. Mohan continued to put up posters in support of the candidate despite the warning. Later in the night,he was allegedly attacked at his house. “Four to five people attacked me when I was alone. They hit me with a stone following which I received head injuries,” Singh claimed.

A delegation of BJP-SAD met the UT Home Secretary and IG on Tuesday morning to submit a memorandum. A copy of the memorandum was also forwarded to the election observer. The copy states that Badheri along with four to five other people attacked Mohan Singh under the influence of liquor.

Congress leaders, meanwhile continue to claim Badheri was assaulted by BJP-SAD members without any provocation. Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee President B B Bahl said,”Badheri called the police late at night complaining about the presence of undesirable people outside his house. As he stepped out of his house to see someone off,he was attacked. He received injuries on his head as well as knee.

He is unable to walk and election meetings for the day had to be called off. Strict action should be taken against the attackers.”

The police have received complaints from both the parties with officials claiming investigations were on into the incident. Both Bhupinder Singh Badheri and Mohan Singh have suffered injuries and were admitted to the Government Hospital,Sector 16. They have been discharged now.
