Colour Bind the World

Painting was a way to relax and an outlet from the long hours in the operating theatre.

Painting was a way to relax and an outlet from the long hours in the operating theatre. Today,it’s a full-time passion,” says Dr Vijay Sahgal, who is holding his first art exhibition. Sahgal specialises in oil on canvas and, instead of brushes, uses a spatula to create a unique effect and texture on canvas.

“I love painting, photography and cultivating bonsai and so I experiment with varied themes and bold colours,” he says. In his studio, works on landscapes, silhouettes and abstracts look down from the walls. Among the many works of impressive scale and magnificence is Marchand de Chevaux (The Horse Dealer),which is inspired by a horse auction in French villages and is one of Sahgal’s favourites,as the artist loves horses. “They are the most stunning animals on the planet,” he adds.

Sisters of Charity is a work inspired by the dedication of the nurses Sahgal has worked with. The nurses are depicted as nuns, offering shelter to the homeless and the suffering. Apart from his works,on display are the many sketches Sahgal does when he conceives of a work.

A recurring theme in Sahgal’s photography and paintings is flowers, especially waterlilies, which he depicts with a delicate touch and in a riot of colours.

The exhibition is on till today at House Number 245,Sector 16,from 10 am to 7 pm.
