Shuchi Gargas 30 paintings showcase India through its coins
All of us carry coins in our wallets but seldom do we look at them to appreciate their aesthetic beauty. But coins have always intrigued city-based artist Shuchi Garga who finds them fascinating for their ability to showcase the details of an era,its art and culture.
Inspired by coins both current as well as antique Garga has put up an exhibition of 30 of her works themed around ancient heritage.
One of the works, based on zodiac signs and complete with astrological representations, showcases the era of Akbar, while another one has coins from the 70s with lotus symbols. I have tried to showcase India through its coins, tells Garga. One of her works on blue canvas, showcasing the power of the currency,is particularly engaging. Amongst other notable works are those that have Sanskrit and Hindi excerpts talking about the evolution of the present-day circular coins from the earlier asymmetrical ones.
The artist has extensively used symbols such as fish, animals and sun. These are references from punch marked coins that were issued in 7th-6th century BC and were mostly drawn from nature, says Garga, who has also drawn influences from the dynastic coins with Greek gods and goddesses figuring prominently on them.
Amongst the five frames that stand apart are those inspired from Mohenjo-daro. They take you through the architecture and lifestyle prevalent during the time of the Indus Valley civilisation. Garga has shown the city through the eyes of a semi-nude lady, then as a backdrop for people in conversation,as also through a wall that has impressions of the art of the era,and through the jewellery that people wore at that time.
In this small section,I have brought to fore my love for music, says Garga,as she takes us through the four frames that have tablas in hues of red, yellow and bronze. To me,they represent happiness and are an integral part of our culture, she adds.
The exhibition is on at House No. 1718,Sector 4,Panchkula,till January 17
