CN & Heard

UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil while addressing the gathering at an IT conclave had pearls of wisdom to offer.

Administrator’s bitter pill

UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil while addressing the gathering at an IT conclave had pearls of wisdom to offer. He asked the participants to stop praising each other which he said happens at such conferences and the purpose is lost. Rather he cited the example of the Parliament where people criticise each other. He also could not refrain from talking about the contributions of two former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Rajiv Gandhi.

Teachers try to woo officials

With the long-pending promotions of government school teachers being on the cards, the office of District Education Officer these days remains surrounded with a number of teachers. With the insecurity of being missed out on the seniority list (which decides priority of promotions) the teachers try and remain in the notice of the UT education department officials. A number of such teachers who are not associated with any of the teacher’s unions were seen frequenting the education department more than twice last week, with two of them seeking a review of their respective school’s performance in past few years.

Not missing the last chance

Recently, the home secretary of the UT Administration was repatriated to his parent state after he completed his 3 year tenure here. Known to be a very media friendly bureaucrat,he did not spare even the last opportunity to meet the city journalists. Ensuring that his brainchild a theme based restaurant was inaugurated on the last day of his stint,he invited the entire media for the event. That is another matter of the fact that media shows no mercy to anyone and despite his friendliness with them,he was still criticized for courting controversies during his tenure.

Good to see you

A day before the Judge Bribery case was to conclude,an application requesting adjournment was moved by Justice (retd) Nirmal Yadav’s counsel. The same was not given a green signal by Advocate Anupam Gupta, special public prosecutor for CBI. Till morning everyone expected that senior lawyer K T S Tulsi will not appear. However, the senior lawyer appeared. Surprised at this,Justice Permod Kohli enquired about his request for adjournment. Tulsi said that he had to come since the CBI special public prosecutor had shown reluctance to give a nod to the adjournment slip. Tulsi received warmth from the Bench as Justice Permod Kohli remarked “it is good to see you”.

To be or not to be

It seems there is only one issue which is dominating all other academic discussions on the Panjab University campus these days. Everyone, irrespective of the department, faculty and groups is speculating whether one of the Senators who is also a Dean would be successful in getting his son- in-law appointed to one of the key administrative posts at the University. While, different lobbies are making the most of it by leaving no stone unturned to get their ‘purpose’ solved,it is giving sleepless nights to the frontrunners for the post of Dean College Development Council (DCDC) who is yet to be appointed as well as already appointed Registrar whose selection had also attracted flak.

‘Weird’ choices

The top bureaucrats of Chandigarh Administration, who come to the city on deputation period of 2-3 years, are always craving to innovate something or the other, during their brief stints in the city. Be it the pink coloured Tuk-tuks; blood-red coloured air-conditioned buses; green and purple lights on the roundabouts; fountains on the roadsides and now a rainforest themed restaurant opened at Hotel Shivalikview, with anacondas, tigers’ replicas looking at you, while you have your meal in the restaurant. To top it up,the background music on a jungle theme, with voices of animals and birds shall also ‘entertain’ you, while you enjoy the food at the restaurant.
