Cn & Heard

The recent strike by school bus operators ensured that parents had to ply their wards to school.

Setting examples
The recent strike by school bus operators ensured that parents had to ply their wards to school. Even as most of them whined about the disturbance in their daily schedule, they didn’t let their consternation be apparent to their children. “It is a blessing in disguise, you see. At a time when the world leaders are struggling hard to finalise the Copenhagen agenda on climate change,we can set an example. Less buses means less vehicles on roads, thereby less pollution.” The G5 and G8 leaders may take a cue from this ‘leadership by example’.

No wasteful expenditure
Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal found himself in a peculiar position during the Assembly proceedings last week, when his nephew and Finance Minister expressed reservations over the CM’s suggestion to send a delegation to Australia to study traffic management. Now,Manpreet has never made bones about his concern for fiscal prudence. So when MLA Ajit Inder Singh Mofar moved a call attention notice on the increase in the number of accidents in the state, the CM suggested sending a delegation to Australia to study the traffic model Down Under. At this Manpreet said,“All data of traffic management in Australia or any other country can be procured on the Internet without sending the delegation abroad. I can personally make it available. The expenditure on the travel can be saved.” The CM,however, said he would summon a meeting of police officers concerned and give directions so that steps are taken to streamline traffic movement.

Problem child
The Municipal Corporation seems to feel helpless when it comes to dealing with children. After numerous complaints by residents of various sectors about children playing in parks and disrupting peace, children were blamed once again for the non-functional fountains. As one of the councillors pointed out that the fountains in the green belts in his ward were not working, the officials blamed children for the same. “It is difficult to keep a check on children playing in the area,” quipped an official.

Divided house
Looks like that the divisions at the topmost echelons of the BJP have also started manifesting themselves at the local level. For example,in a recent press conference, the fissures in the Panchkula BJP came out in the open. While senior leader V K Sood claimed that the party wanted fresh elections to the MC president’s post, another BJP leader and MC vice-president B B Singhal later said,“It is completely wrong. We never demanded fresh elections. Instead, all we wanted was that the power of signatory authority that has been withdrawn by the Haryana Government from the MC vice-president be given back.”

Wrong message
A public awareness message on AIDS,displayed outside the office of a judge in the High Court, gave some people an impression that there were facilities of free testing here. When the enquiries from litigants became too much,an exasperated reader snapped,“Do I look like a doctor?”

Bad lights
The traffic lights at busy crossings in the city are failing far too often now. They seem to have caught up the habit of developing a snag during rush hours. To their credit, the traffic cops are suitably deployed at these junctions, but at the end of the day,a man cannot be expected to compete with machine when it comes to synchronisation. Also, the efforts of these poor cops, who are braving smoke and noise pollution to direct traffic, are scuttled by myriad VIP sirens, where noisome sirens ask everyone to get out of the way. Therefore,it is not unusual to find long jams at these crossings. The authorities are requested to ensure that the traffic lights, especially those on busy crossings, work efficiently.
