Inert administration
The Chandigarh Administration took over two years to overcome its inertia in sending the proposal sent by the Punjab and Haryana High Court to enhance the sanctioned strength of Judges in UT district courts. It was only after the Administration was upbraided by the High Court that the Administration woke up from its deep slumber to send the proposal. It was in 2011 that the High Court had sent the proposal,on the administrative side,to the Administration which had to simply forwarded it to the central government to get final clearance. Now is this a case of the Administration being lethargic or merely forgetful?
Women Power?
In the recently held meeting of the General House of the Municipal Corporation it is the women councillors who seemed to be at the forefront, fighting for and defending their political parties if the complaints given to the police are anything to go by. All the complaints given to the police have been filed by women councillors. In fact several have been named in the complaints as well with allegations of manhandling fellow councillors leveled on them. Interestingly,as the House erupted over the rail bribery scam, the mock session that followed was also presided over by a woman councillor
Show off
Those contesting the Panchkula Municipal Corporation polls had left no stone unturned to exhibit their show of strength. A fleet of vehicles trailed each candidate to the Mini Secretariat in Sector 1 in the city at the time of filing of nominations. Even music bands accompanied some of the candidates and drum-beating was common during the nominations. Given the pomp and show, one of the officials commented that elections are a big festival in democracy.
Staying cool
With the rise in temperature creating a lot of problems for the common lot,it was not suprising to see players suffering too. It so happened that during the YMCA Total tennis championship at the YMCA Courts in Sector 11,Chandigarh,a number of players withdrew from the competition. As the temperature touched 43 degrees Celsius, the players thought it would be better for them to stay indoors rather than suffering in the open. Even those who played in the championship had to take cover from time to time and also needed gallons of water to keep themselves hydrated.
Support system
With marathon arguments on,in the controversial theme park case, one of the lawyers, awaiting his turn to argue, made most of a pillar in the Court room. Hiding behind the pillar, the lawyer dozed off for a while as other lawyers were engrossed in heated arguments. Leaning over the pillar gave adequate support to the sleepy lawyer.
Clash over trash
During the Vidyarthi Panchayat,NSUI student leader Sunny Mehta and Dean Students Welfare Prof A S Ahluwalia locked horns over the issue of littering on campus. Losing his cool,Professor Ahluwalia told Mehta,Mera munh na khula menu pata tusi kinnianku safaiyan rakhde o (dont force me to open my mouth,I know how concerned you are about cleanliness) . In response,Mehta said,Tusi khol lo munh dasso assi ki nai karde (go ahead, tell us where have we failed). It was only when one of the students present at the site intervened and requested Mehta to stay quiet, that the argument finally subsided.
Mismanaged
At a recently held conference in the city about the traffic problems and increasing pollution levels in the city,a senior official contended that Chandigarh does not have qualified officials for traffic management. With the Administration indulging in experiments with traffic management one after the other that often cause harassment for the residents, maybe it is high time that some expert be consulted.
