It was a drive down memory lane at the Vintage & Classic Car Club rally
These grand old ladies made heads turn today,as they set off for their annual sojourn, from Chandigarh to Kasauli. It was time for the Vintage and Classic Car Club Rally, which was flagged off from the Lake Club and it was a drive down memory lane, watching these grand beauties back in action. All pre-39 cars are classified as Pure Vintage, and the grand dame here was a 1933 Ford Tourer, owned by Brig JS Phoolka (retd),the founder president of the club. A gleaming yellow and blue exterior, luxurious upholstery, the cars a classic beauty. Ask Brig Phoolka his age,and he says he is Pure Vintage too,but Phoolkas car beat him to it by good three years. Imported to the country by the Nawab of Bareilly, today it won the prize for being the best vintage car.
BS Manco, the Secretary General of the club had got his three oldies to the rally – a Chevrolet Fleetmaster,an Austin A40,and a Buick – all 1948 models. His Fleetmaster was adjudged the best-maintained classic car here.
Another grand car which rolled in today was an eight-cylinder Buick, owned by SS Bhurjee. Maintaining these cars is a labour of love. They may give you only three to four kms to a litre, but possessing them is a pleasure, smiles Manco.
The 1968 VW Beetle, which won the second prize in the Classic Car category,is owned by Guddu Sidhu,a resident of Sector 28. Sidhu was driving his much-loved vehicle after a year and after a change of battery,it was as good as ever, doing a cool 100 kms an hour.
Sponsored by Kasauli Resorts, the prize for the best-restored car went to the Hindustan 14 in metallic maroon, owned by Gen Beuli (retd). Gur Angad Singhs 1948 two-door Austin A40 got the second prize in this category. A special prize was given to Balbir Singh,an auto electrician who has kept these beauties in good shape. As Kishie Singh, the master of the ceremonies put it,The prize is equivalent to a Ph.D. Henceforth,he will be known as Dr Balbir Singh. Cheers to that!
