Civic security gates defunct for months

Municipal Corporation had proposed that residents pay for guards posted at gates

The security gates installed by the Municipal Corporation in Sector 15 are lying defunct for the past few months due to a lack of a policy for their proper maintenance. The gates were installed as part of a pilot project. If these prove to be successful, the gates will be installed in other sectors. However, the civic body has failed to formulate a policy to manage these gates till now.

As per the proposal, the gates were installed at the entry and exit points of V-4 roads in the sector. During the night, only one gate is allowed to remain open. A guard is supposed to be deputed at the gate to maintain a record of the vehicles entering the sector at night after a specific time.

The aim of installation of these gates was that the security of the sector is taken care of with a check on those entering the sector. If the model proves to be a success it will be replicated in Sector 21 for which the approval has been received from the Administration.

The lack of a policy to maintain the gates is proving to be one of the hindrances in making these operational. The councillors of the Municipal Corporation had demanded that a policy for the gates be formulated and a resolution for the same be passed. An official of the civic body said that a policy for the security gates was yet to be formulated. The gates will be operational once this is done.

A section of the residents were also not in favour of the gates being installed as they opined it would cause inconvenience to them with just one gate being opened. While it had been proposed that the residents would collect money to pay salary to the security guards, the idea was not welcomed.
