PANCHKULA: District and Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi on Thursday reserved orders on the bail application moved by Doon MLA from Himachal Pradesh,Ram Kumar Chaudhary,for Friday. The court also heard arguments on the framing of charges against the MLA and listed it for orders on July 29. The MLA had moved an application for bail through the revision petition filed against the order of the Chief Judicial Magistrate which had denied him bail earlier.
Two killed,four injured in 2 Ambala accidents
AMBALA: In two separate accidents,two persons were killed and four injured Wednesday night. One David was killed and his father Ashok Kumar seriously injured when the bike they were riding rammed into a truck parked on the road. In another incident,one Jagmohan Singh died and three were injured when the car in which they were travelling rammed into an electric pole near Adhoya village after the driver lost control over the vehicle. The injured have been hospitalised.
Scheme launched for security of BPL workers
CHANDIGARH: The administration launched Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna. The scheme aims to provide security to workers of the unorganised sector and BPL families here. Camps in slums and rural areas would be organised. Those who will enrol under the scheme would be provided treatment amounting to Rs 30,000 per annum in empanelled hospitals across the country.
Politics over inclusion of Cong councillors name
CHANDIGARH: Senior BJP leader Harmohan Dhawan Thursday condemned the inclusion of the name of a Congress councillor in the invitation card of an event being organised by the Municipal Corporation for the Uttarakhand victims. Dhawan claimed that the Congress was playing politics by including the name of Gurbax Rawat. This is not the first time that a controversy has been sparked by the inclusion of names in invitation cards.
Leaders go on strike against electricity board
CHANDIGARH: To protest the proposal for privatisation of the electricity department here,leaders across political all parties went on a strike Thursday. Congress,BJP,BSP,CPI,CPM leaders held the protest at sector 17. Besides supporting the department’s employees,their other demands include changing of old transformers and a need to fill up the vacant posts. BSP blamed the local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal for the situation.
GGDSD-36 holds talk by novelist Sunjeev Sahota
CHANDIGARH: GGDSD College,Sector 36,in collaboration with British Council,hosted an interactive session-cum-talk with British novelist Sunjeev Sahota on Thursday. The event was a part of the colleges celebration of 40 years of excellence in education.Philippa Baker,network development manager of British Council India,said Sunjeev had been hailed as the best of young British novelists by Granta magazine and identified by The Observer as one of the ‘faces to watch in 2011. His first novel Ours are the Street has won worldwide acclaim. Sahota read out an excerpt from his next The Years Of The Runaways,followed by an engaging and stimulating interactive session with the audience. He also talked about his love for Punjab to which he traces his roots.
