BTech student caught cheating,commits suicide
MOHALI: A B.Tech second semester student,Kailash Chand,aged around 20,allegedly hanged himself from a ceiling fan in his rented accommodation at Motemajra village in Mohali. In a suicide note recovered from the spot,the native of Bilaspur in Himachal Pradesh said he had been caught copying in todays compartment exam and had been suffering from chronic illness,Investigating Officer Ashok Kumar said. The police have shifted the body to the Civil Hospital for autopsy,which will be held tomorrow. Chand was student of a private professional college at Tangori village in Mohali.
10 years RI for convicted drug peddler
CHANDIGARH: Additional District and Sessions Judge Lalit Batra on Monday awarded 10 years rigorous imprisonment to one Bir Singh under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Bir Singh has also been fined Rs 1 lakh. Singh was arrested by the UT Police on April 30,2009,from near the Aroma light point. A total 1.5 kg of charas was found on him. The police had received information that Singh had come to the city to deliver the consignment of the contraband.
Gym members allege fraud by owner
CHANDIGARH: Members of a gymnasium in Industrial Area have accused its owner of fraud. In their complaint to police,the members have alleged that they gave nearly Rs 9,000 to the owner for using the gym for a period of 10 years,but found the gym locked after a few days. The complainants five of a reported 1,500 members said they had informed the police on May 26. Station House Officer,Industrial Area Police Station,Inspector Malkit Singh,said they had not received the complaint yet,but if a fraud has been committed,the police will certainly look into the matter.
